New Year, New Project
Making a Demolition Plan
The new year is popular time for making lists, goals, and resolutions. If one of your resolutions is to tackle a certain project in your home, make it a goal to do it efficiently and start with a list. Having a plan is an important step, no matter the size of a task. Here are some tips on how to plan for a little light demolition during your new year project.
Planning for Light Demolition
From replacing flooring to taking down a shed, it may seem like a simple enough task, until you’re in the middle of it. DIY projects can still get physically demanding and time-consuming, especially when not properly planned. But with the right preparation, simplified techniques, and teamwork, the process becomes easier. Here’s how to start:
- Define the scope of the project. What needs to be done? Is there a timeframe? What tools and/or permits do you need? Once you’ve determined the details, you can focus on the task at hand.
- Mark any areas containing electrical wiring, plumbing, and other potentially hazardous materials. Use caution around this space.
- Tackle one thing at a time. Streamline your process by focusing on one aspect. If it’s the shed, obviously you want to clean it out before you start tearing it down. If it’s the floor, clear the room and then pick a corner to begin. Once the obstacles are gone, the area is ready for the next part of the process.
- Once the breakdown begins, start with small, removable components—such as shelving or fixtures—before moving on to larger structures like the roof and walls.
- Demo from the top down. Remove upper features before lower ones for more stability.
- Consistently clear away debris to maintain a safe, clean workspace.
- Separate recyclables from trash to reduce waste.
- Rent a dumpster to manage debris. There’s usually more than you might think.
With the right plan, light demolition projects become even lighter with safer, less stressful techniques. But if you still need help, it’s one call away.
