How to Get Rid of Old Furniture

Deciding a piece of furniture has to go is the first step. Then you need to decide how to go about getting rid of it. Depending on the condition of the item, there are several options.

1. Sell it.

If the furniture is still in excellent shape, see if anyone would be willing to purchase and pick it up. Post pictures of the piece on marketplace sites online and let the bidding begin!

2. Donate it.

Furniture that’s still in good condition can be offered to a local charity. Some organizations are even willing to pick up your furniture, but this may take a few weeks.

3. Scrap it.

Most metal furniture can be recycled at a designated facility. Determine if the metal is ferrous or non-ferrous. When you hold a magnet close to the metal, it’s ferrous if it sticks. Non-ferrous metals can cost more to recycle so you need to confirm if the dealer will accept it. You can also take your piece apart and recycle other materials like untreated wood and plastic.

4. Trash it.

While most furniture is too large to fit in a standard receptacle, often items can be found on the curb waiting for bulk trash pick-up day. Check your local regulations about leaving a large piece outside of your home or office. Your area may have rules against it. If you can’t leave it at the curb, you can rent a dumpster. The rental company will drop it off in your driveway, you load it up, and then the company comes to pick it back up. Another option is to find a local landfill, ask if they accept the type of furniture you have, and if they are open for public dumping. They may charge a disposal fee. Then load the item into a truck and haul it to its new home at the dump.
